Year of the Pond Bat

In The Netherlands, 2023 has been declared the year of the Pond Bat (Myotis dasycneme). With the Year of the Pond Bat, awareness is made forthis large bat in need. A special bat species that needs help in the Netherlands. Colonies of Pond bats in the Netherlands are almost always found in buildings such as church attics, in cavity walls and under roof tiles. Insulation of houses, without proper investigation and measures, can mean the death sentence for the bats. The Year of the Pond Bat is an initiative of the Dutch Bat Working Group (VLEN) and the Dutch Mammal Association. In this Special a selection of stunning images of the Pond Bat made by Theo Douma. Theo specializes in taking (nocturnal) images of European bats, including these beautiful images of the Lake Bat.
